… Another day another destiny.
– Les Miserables
We have one more day of meetings and time in our classrooms before we finally get to meet our students. I’m excited and scared and nervous and all those things I usually am before the first day of school. I plan to be at school for as long as it takes to feel ready for tomorrow but in the end I probably won’t feel ready ever, but I will be ready enough.
This past week has been difficult in many ways and wonderful in others. I wanted to write more but there just wasn’t time. I spent all of last week at school, getting to know my new colleagues, learning the ropes of my new school and turning my classroom from a storage room into a classroom. It feels great to look around and see the classroom take shape.
This is what I came in to in August.
And this is what I left on Friday.
I’ve decided to go with groups to start the year. Last year scared me off groups and I was hesitant to try again but after talking with the grade four teachers who taught them last year and with the other grade 5 Intensive French teacher, I’m convinced that groups will be the best thing for them. I’ve also turned the desks inward and gone back to shared supplies. This is something I’ve wanted to do forever and tried to do somewhat last year and I hope will work much better this year. I feel like this will help our students to be prepared for middle school where they won’t be able to put things in their desks. Plus they won’t have the distraction of being able to play with things in their desks and we won’t have to do the weekly desk clean-outs that take up so much time. The desks and chairs are lovely and new.
My biggest worry so far is about teaching Math. I’ve never done it before. Luckily though, this will be my 5th time teaching the Intensive French program which is very scripted and I know very well so I can do that without needing to do a whole lot of planning and instead focus my attention on the Math. I have all kinds of text resources as well as some manipulatives. It’s just a matter of learning and teaching the curriculum. I’m hoping to be able to go to a Math PD soon as well.
This week is going to be very busy. Not only is it our first week of school with students, but I’m also performing in a musical review show on Friday and Saturday, with rehearsals Tuesday-Thursday so I have a feeling I’m going to be one exhausted, but happy lady on Sunday!
If you’re starting school this week, best of luck. If you’ve already started, I hope it’s going well 🙂
